Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy for Kids: The Service Most Parents Have Never Heard Of

May 21, 20263 min read

Ask most parents what a physio does and you'll hear the same answers. Help kids walk. Build strength. Recover from injuries.

All true. But there's a whole area of physiotherapy that most families, and a lot of GPs, have never come across.

Cardiorespiratory physiotherapy. And for the kids who need it, getting the right support early makes a big difference.

What is it?

Cardiorespiratory physiotherapy focuses on the lungs and heart. Specifically, how a child breathes, how they clear their airway, and how they manage conditions that affect their respiratory system.

In kids, this might mean support for:

  • Chronic cough or persistent chest congestion

  • Asthma and breathing difficulties during exercise

  • Recurrent chest infections or pneumonia

  • Conditions like cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, or bronchopulmonary dysplasia

  • Children who struggle to clear secretions, often those with complex medical needs

  • Post-hospitalisation respiratory recovery

  • Breathing pattern dysfunction, where a child's breathing mechanics have become inefficient over time

The aim is to help children breathe better, feel better, and get back to doing what kids do.

Why don't more families know about it?

Cardiorespiratory physio has mostly lived in hospitals. ICUs, respiratory wards, post-surgical care. So families rarely realise it's available in a clinic, or that it applies to their child at all.

A lot of the kids we see have had breathing concerns for months, sometimes longer, with no one connecting them to physio. If your child has been told they'll "grow out of it" or that it's "just asthma," it's worth asking whether their breathing mechanics, posture, and airway clearance have actually been looked at

What happens in a session?

Every session is shaped around what your child needs

Assessment

We start by understanding your child's full history. Their diagnosis, medications, how they breathe at rest and during activity, and what you've noticed at home.

Airway Clearance Techniques

For kids with mucus build-up or frequent infections, we teach gentle, age-appropriate techniques to help clear the airways. This might involve positioning, breathing exercises, or handheld devices, always in a way that feels manageable for your child.

Breathing Pattern Retraining

Some kids develop inefficient breathing habits, especially after illness. We work on retraining those patterns so breathing takes less effort.

Exercise Tolerance and Activity Support

For kids who avoid activity because they get breathless or tired, we build up their confidence and capacity gradually. The goal is getting them back to play, sport, and school without it feeling hard.

Parent Education

You leave knowing exactly what to do at home. No jargon, no overwhelm.

Signs your child might benefit

You don't need a diagnosis to reach out. It's worth booking an assessment if your child:

- Gets breathless quickly during play or sport

- Has a cough that won't go away

- Seems to work harder to breathe than other kids

- Has had repeated chest infections or been hospitalised for a respiratory illness

- Has asthma, cystic fibrosis, or a condition affecting their breathing

- Breathes through their mouth most of the time, or has noisy breathing at rest

- Gets more tired than you'd expect for their age

A note on complex needs

Some kids we work with have feeding tubes, are on home oxygen, or have conditions affecting multiple body systems. Cardiorespiratory physio can be an important part of their overall care. We work alongside paediatricians, respiratory specialists, and other allied health providers regularly, so if your child has complex needs and you're not sure where to start, just call us.

Where to from here

Many families come to us after months of managing symptoms on their own. The earlier we can assess what's going on, the sooner we can put a plan in place.

If anything in this article sounds familiar, give us a call. Same-week appointments may be available.
